Masks

Thou hast made me cry.
I speak but the truth.
Life beckoned me to die.
For I tasted the forbidden fruit.

And now I know what’s not for me.
It’s what all else can gain happiness from.
I know for it’s right there to see.
I’m doomed, until kingdom come.

And so I cast away this mask.
The twentieth that I wore.
Fear not, within I remain the same.
The masks are because I swore.

I swore to smile, to laugh, and why?
For I fear others would know my pain.
And so I wear these masks each day.
Until when I am slain.

Varun Rajagopalan.
